Since the great “unlock”, the team at Herts Essentials noticed that over 50% of the deliveries were fresh fruit and vegatables. A decision was made to expand.
Now open is the first of two planned County Grocers stores, otherwise known as Farm Shops. By doing this we have been able to nearly treble the range, to include a full fresh selection including meats poultry, dairy, a larger cake and biscuits assortment and widen the range in free from products as well as offering beers wines and spirits and a frozen range from “Field Fresh”, and lots more.
We have also changed the name! The shops will be called “Clifford’s” and Herts essential deliveries becomes “Herts Essentials at Cliffords”.
From only a dozen orders!
At first it was only half a dozen orders but at the pandemic’s height the amount reached as many as 60 a day. Now as the shortages have eased the Flack family are finding many of their customers are continuing to support them and shop local.
Newly-introduced social-distancing guidelines have often resulted in long queues outside food stores. Under the ‘new normal’ some shoppers are not considering returning to a supermarket anytime soon.
Rob said: “There are a lot of people who want to support local enterprise. I was chatting to a customer the other day who said no way am I going back to a supermarket.
“I spend between two to three hours a day on the phone to people to help them with their orders. It means so much to them.
What we are doing is not rocket science. It’s not difficult. We are offering a personalised service to people that need it and are finding big retailers difficult.
“If people are desperate for things we will try to find them. It should only take us a few days to order something if it is out of stock.”
Herts Essential Deliveries has more than 1,000 household items online and a flat delivery charge of just £3. All members of the Flack family are enlisted so that they can deliver across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Essex.
The website stocks everything a supermarket would and at competitive prices. Rob visits New Spitalfields Market to buy fresh fruit and veg between two to three times a week and milk is supplied by the local milkman.
For bakers out there Herts Essential Deliveries stocks ten different types of flour. The company is also the only supplier of BN biscuits in the country.
Herts Essential Deliveries now has plans to offer customers a click-and-collect service from their Hoddesdon warehouse. And whoever makes the 3,000th order will not have to pay a penny for it – much like their 1,000th and 2,000th orders.
I think what we are doing is great. It is good fun. When we started out we thought maybe we would last a couple of months. As long as there is demand we will continue.

Highly recommend Herts Essential Deliveries. Ordered a few bits earlier this afternoon and they have just been delivered. Very friendly service. Such a good thing they are doing for the community.
